OF FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Padmini Rao, Reporter for the United Nations General Assembly- Disarmament and International Security, engages Vansh Narula, a man of few but very thoughtful words, in a short interview.

IP: “What are you expecting from the delegates?”
Chairperson: “Nothing extravagant or extraordinary or anything of the sort. I just want good debate, and I want them to cover each and every aspect mentioned the background guide, specifically with respect to peacekeeping operations and the problems that arise during these peacekeeping operations.”

IP: “What, in your opinion, are the qualities necessary to be the best delegate?”
Chairperson: “That person has to lead the debate, has to know what he or she is talking about and he or she has to have proper, substantive research. He or she should also be able to lobby better than the other delegates to ensure that his or her bloc gets the maximum number of votes during voting procedures. I also have a marking sheet to find the best delegate and the delegate has to score at least eight out of ten on each parameter.”

IP: “What do you have to say about the accusations against UN peacekeepers? How do you think peacekeepers should be tried for the crimes that they’re accused of?”
Chairperson: “I think I shall refrain from answering these questions as I do not want to give away my personal opinions on the agenda that we are supposed to discuss, so that I remain unbiased during the sessions as well.”

IP: “What do you think of President Trump’s decision to block immigrants from predominantly Muslim nations, and his decision to block Syrian refugees?”
Chairperson: “President Trump’s decision to block immigrants from predominantly Muslim countries is not new, and was also taken by President Obama when he was in office. The only difference is that the media is giving it all the hype now because the ban will be in effect for ninety days, which is thrice the duration that it lasted previously. Moreover, it is justified when it comes to refugees because many countries have banned refugees and asylum seekers, because of the ideology that the taxpayer’s money should, first and foremost, take care of the citizens of the country and then go to any other international pursuits. Furthermore, the nation may want to make sure that their people get a better shot at jobs in that country, so President Trump’s decision is not very surprising or scandalous.”

IP: “As a delegate, if you’re asked to choose any two of Research, Documentation and Lobbying skills, what would you choose and why?”
Chairperson: “As it is absolutely necessary for a delegate to have adequate research, it might, in specific scenarios outweigh documentation and lobbying, but not always. I cannot really choose any two of these.”

IP: “Any advice for first timers?”
Chairperson: “ Just be calm and I will try to share as much of my experience as I can with you, and I shall make sure that you have a great learning experience and lots of fun, of course.”
